how large the chamber where the catalytic material is. If you hollow it out, it could just create a hollow chamber with a diameter larger than that of the exhaust pipe. A sudden increase in pipe diameter then a sudden decrease with this chamber seems like it would inhibit flow. That being said, I've never hollowed one out and seen exactly how large the chamber is, the difference may be negligible. But I do think getting DPs, even cheap ones, would be better than gutting the pre-cats. Despite the catalytic material in them, the bends are horrible. Two near ninety degree bends, not to mention the odd shapes that make up the pipe because of bolt clearance issues.
